What it remembers
Hanukkah begins on 25 Kislev and lasts eight days. It recalls the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the time of the Maccabees. Tradition tells of a small amount of oil that kept the light burning for eight days.
One more light each night
A hanukkiyah has eight lights and a helper light, the shamash. The most widespread custom adds one light each night, with blessings and songs. It differs from the seven-branched menorah. When Hanukkah coincides with Shabbat, the lighting order and timing need preparation; consult your community’s guidance.
Sharing the festival
Latkes, sufganiyot and other foods cooked in oil vary by family and heritage. Playing with a sevivon or dreidel is another custom. Join a community lighting or share an evening at home; check times and food requirements, and keep lights in a safe location under supervision.
